Getting started
From a new account to an SSH session on your first server.
This guide takes you from signing up to logging in to a running server. It takes a few minutes; the server itself is usually ready within a minute or two.
Create an account
Open console.odinex.cloud/signup and sign up with your email address and a password, or with Google or GitHub.
Verify your email address
We send you a link to confirm your email address. Open it in the same browser. Until the address is verified the console lets you look around but not create resources. If the email does not arrive, the console can send it again.
You can turn on two-factor authentication (TOTP) under Account → Security. We recommend it.
Top up your balance
Odinex is prepaid: resources are paid for from your balance, by the hour. Go to Billing, choose an amount and pay by card. The minimum and maximum amount, and any payment processing fee, are shown before you pay.
To create a resource, your balance has to cover at least one hour of all your resources, the new one included. See Billing for how charges work and what happens when the balance runs out.
Add an SSH key
Servers are reached over SSH. If you don't have a key pair yet, create one on your computer:
ssh-keygen -t ed25519 -C "laptop"Then go to SSH keys → Add SSH key and paste the contents of the public key, ~/.ssh/id_ed25519.pub.
Never upload the private key (the file without .pub).
Create a server
Go to Servers → Create server and choose:
- Location:
fra1(Frankfurt). - Image: an operating system such as Ubuntu or Debian, or an app image.
- Type: the size of the server. See Server types and Pricing.
- Networking: a public IPv4 and an IPv6 address are on by default. A server needs at least one of them. The IPv4 address is billed separately; see Networking.
- SSH key: the key you added in the previous step.
- Name: a hostname such as
web-1.
Optionally add labels, private networks, firewalls or cloud-init user data. The server starts as soon as it has been created.
If you create a server without an SSH key, a root password is generated and shown once. Copy it then; it is not stored and cannot be shown again (you can reset it later).
Connect
When the server's status is Running, copy its IPv4 address from the server page and connect as root:
For an IPv6-only server use its IPv6 address: ssh root@2001:db8::1. If you can't connect, open the browser
console from the server page; it works even when the network inside the server is misconfigured.
What next
- Protect the server with a firewall. Without one, all inbound traffic is allowed.
- Add a volume for data, or turn on backups.
- Create a project API token and automate with the CLI, Terraform or the API.
The same steps with the CLI
odx context create my-project # paste a project API token
odx ssh-key create --name laptop --public-key-from-file ~/.ssh/id_ed25519.pub
odx server create --name web-1 --type t1 --image ubuntu-24.04 --location fra1 --ssh-key laptop
odx server ssh web-1Image and type names (ubuntu-24.04, t1) are examples: list the current ones with odx image list --type system
and odx server-type list.
