Networking

IPv4, IPv6, floating IPs and reverse DNS

Each Odinex server comes with one public IPv4 and one IPv6 address, and you can leave out either. IPv6 is included in the price. Floating IPs are extra addresses that you move between servers, for example to fail over to a standby, and reverse DNS can be set on all of them.

Key features

  • Dual stack by default

A public IPv4 and IPv6 address on every server, configured automatically at boot.

  • IPv6 included

The IPv6 address costs nothing extra. Leave out IPv4 when you do not need it.

  • Floating IPs

An IPv4 or IPv6 address you can move to another server at any time.

  • Reverse DNS

Set the PTR record of primary and floating IPs, for example for a mail server.

  • Private-only servers

Run servers with no public address at all, using private networks and NAT.

  • Clean reputation

Outgoing port 25 is blocked by default to keep addresses off spam lists; relay mail through a provider or ask us to open it.

What it is used for

  • Failover

Keep a standby server ready and move the floating IP to it when the primary fails.

  • Mail servers

Set reverse DNS to match your host name so other mail servers accept your mail.

  • IPv6-only services

Save the IPv4 price for servers that are only reached over IPv6 or a load balancer.

Try it

odx CLI
odx floating-ip create --type ipv4 --name ip-1 --location fra1
odx floating-ip assign ip-1 web-1
odx server set-rdns --hostname mail.example.com web-1

IP addresses: questions and answers

Clear answers about location, infrastructure and billing.

Is a public IPv4 address included in the server price?
No. IPv6 is included; the primary IPv4 address is priced separately and shown on the pricing page. You can create a server without IPv4.
Does a server get a whole IPv6 /64?
No. Each server gets a single IPv6 address.
What is the difference between a floating IP and an Elastic IP?
A floating IP is added to servers that have a public interface and must be configured inside the server. An Elastic IP gives a private-only server a public IPv4 address with nothing to configure.
Can I send email from my server?
Through a mail provider on ports 587 or 465, yes. Outgoing port 25 is blocked by default; open a support ticket to have it opened for your own mail server.
